CHAPTER 12

“Let’s talk with the first person on Martha’s list,” Davis said after they left the GROW office. Shadows met them as they headed to the truck, causing Brigid to look up. Clouds had moved in while they were inside, and the sun had become blocked out. What had started out as a bright and sunny morning was quickly turning into what might be a rainy afternoon or evening.

“Okay, so who would that be?” Brigid asked as she continued to look at the sky and inspect the clouds. The ones right above her didn’t seem too dark, but the ones in the distance seemed much darker, although the mountains made it difficult to see for sure.

“Name’s Hannah Choi,” Davis said as they got in his truck. Once inside, he typed on the laptop mounted in the center. “She works at the Rescue Center, so that’ll be our next stop.”

Brigid nodded, remaining silent. She had a lot of questions that were circling in her mind, so she dug in her purse and pulled out the little notebook she kept in it for occasions such as this one. She started making notes about each person, her thoughts on each one, and if they still seemed like a plausible suspect, she made a note of that as well.

She didn't really think Martha was someone who would have killed Morgan, although it would be interesting to see if it came up that she’d left the snack bar, particularly since she’d said she’d been there all night. And if she had left, that would be a big red flag, but so far, the others seemed far more plausible than Martha.

Annie had the attitude for it, but Brigid still wasn’t so sure about Fred McCall, although she sensed that he was hiding something. But what? That she didn’t know yet.

It was tough to see how they were going to figure this case out, although she was doing her best to remain hopeful. She and Sheriff Davis had never failed to catch whoever they were looking for, but could this be the first time? And it seemed as though half the town had some kind of a problem with the victim, which made her thoughts drift to Fred McCall. Morgan had been his assistant. Had she acted in a hostile manner with him? And if she had, why hadn’t he fired her?

She was about to ask Davis what he thought when his phone began to ring. He was still driving, so he answered it using the hands-free speaker.

“I think I may have something for you,” Deputy Keegan said after he answered.

“I have ya’ on speaker, so lay it on us,” Davis replied.

“We had a tip that Morgan seemed to always have expensive stuff, despite not having a high paying job, so I took the liberty of looking into her bank records. She would randomly deposit large amounts of cash, usually around once a month or so. I’m still trying to figure out where the money came from,” Keegan began.
